Under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al-Hussein, the Health Care Accreditation Council (HCAC) held a ceremony to launch the National Healthcare Quality and Safety Goals NQSG 2010, under the theme "Our Patients Are in Safe Hands.

" HCAC Chief Executive Officer May Abuhamdia said HCAC has been working diligently with hospitals to apply health care best practice, adding that this year’s goals are unique because they expand the concept of NQSG beyond hospitals, as they apply to all healthcare centers as well.

"By achieving the NQSG goals, we will ensure healthcare institutions are embarking on the process of building the quality culture which is the only way to ensure quality and patient safety across the health care continuum.", she added HCAC Vice Chairperson, Dr. Fawzi Al Hammouri, indicated that Jordan was the first country in the Middle East to adopt a nation wide effort and commit to minimize and eliminate adverse effects in health care facilities.

"This signifies that in Jordan we are committed to adopting international best practices in quality health care and monitoring and evaluating of our programs for continuous improvement." Hammouri added.

Inherent to its purpose and mission, the HCAC develops healthcare accreditation standards, and assists facilities to meet the standards and achieve accreditation through consultations, training, surveyor certification and surveys.

In 2009, HCAC’s goals included a series of steps and processes that address means to prevent harm to patients occurring due to unsafe practices in health care.

The goals focus on developing system wide solutions in the following areas: identifying patients correctly, improving the safety of high alert medications, ensuring correct-site, correct-procedure, correct-patient undergoing surgery.

During the event HCAC also certified seven hospitals that have passed the HCAC survey and met all the requirements for compliance with the NQSG 2009 certification.

HRH Princess Muna finally distributed certificates of award for the 18 surveyor which form the second batch of local surveyors from both the private and public sector.

This brings the total number of HCAC certified surveyors to 26.
